The Vajanského Square in the Slovakian city Martin was designed in the early 1980s and, with its minimalist geometric style, was a daring urban design for its time. The square is shaped by surfaces with varying heights that descend in steps toward the center, where the focal point is: a fountain. On two sides, the square is framed by a metal canopy with small pyramid-shaped roofs. Unfortunately, the square has since fallen into disrepair, and there are plans for its renovation. The fountain, or what remains of it, is no longer functional; it has been filled with soil and planted with herbs. I studied and lived in this city for five years, and the square and its (then still functioning) fountain hold a place in my childhood memories.
A mirror wall in the shape of a V has been placed in the fountain. Both the inside and outside are reflective, as is the ground surface between the walls. Horizontal mirrors reflect the blue of the sky. Vertical mirrors at a 45-degree angle create the illusion of a complete circle, a fountain filled with sky-blue water. On the outside, the surrounding environment is reflected, with the form blending into its surroundings like camouflage.
